GMO, short for genetically modified organism, is an organism whose genetic material has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there.

GMOs started being used in order to delay ripening in crops such as corn. They have been linked to numerous health problems, and are viewed as unsafe. Health problems that have been documented as a result of GMOs consist of organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, and accelerated aging. Whether human or animal, in order to lead a healthy lifestyle, it is important to stay away from foods containing GMOs. Unfortunately, many foods are not labeled “GMO Free,” which may mean you have to do a little bit of research, or it could actually mean they contain GMOs.
